Rounding the Bases: Chris Learns to Read
Same Great Story, A New Name and Additions to the Parent Bonus Section Review: From www.homemakingwithteach.com Chris is a 12 year old boy who loves baseball and is good at it. There is one thing that embarrasses and frustrates him, however: he struggles to read. His parents want to help but aren’t sure how to proceed. This is the beginning of the book Rounding the Bases: Chris Learns to Read. The author has cleverly written this book for struggling readers and their parents. It is a chapter book about a boy who is struggling to learn to read but is just not getting the help he needs in public school. It is also about the help that he and his parents find in the Neurodevelopmental approach to learning. The book is a gentle, pleasant read, and there is a nice bonus section at the end with good resources and three excellent articles. The author, Maggie Dail, was a teacher for 25 years. She has a Masters of Arts in Special Education and has operated her own Learning Resource Center. Later she found her niche in helping homeschool families, including those with children with special needs. She currently helps children and adults in her work as a Neurodevelopmentalist. For the sake of full disclosure, I am a mom with several struggling learners in our family. We are using the Neurodevelomental approach with some of our children and have found it to be extremely helpful and beneficial. This book is a good introduction to the method, and I recommend it if you have a child who could use a little, or a lot, of help. Rounding the Bases: Chris Learns to Read is available from www.centerforneurodevelopment.com for $13.95, or by emailing orders@specialhelps.com orders@specialhelps.com |
